Blueprint Aims to Bring 'Vibe Coding' to Hardware Design

Toronto-based startup Blueprint is attempting to apply the "vibe coding" concept—popularized by software tools like Lovable and Replit—to the physical world, as first reported by BetaKit. The company provides a "language-to-hardware" platform that allows users to convert text-based prompts into comprehensive design and project plans for physical devices.

Blueprint's AI generates detailed instructions covering mechanics, wiring, and suggested off-the-shelf parts. For example, a user designing an MP3 player receives a specific list of components, including necessary screws and 3D-printable parts like plastic casings. The system assumes users possess a 3D printer and basic soldering skills, guiding them through the assembly and testing process. BetaKit reports that clients have already produced over 200,000 plans for items ranging from drones and RC cars to augmented reality glasses and a urine-sampling machine.

Co-founder and CEO David Feldt told BetaKit that traditional hardware design is often "slow and tedious and scattered," relying heavily on human expertise. While the tool serves hobbyists, Feldt notes it also acts as an R&D tool for entrepreneurs building "one of ones" prototypes rather than scalable products. To maintain safety, the company bans the design of explosives, ammunition, and guns, though it permits compound bows.

In terms of growth, Blueprint announced it has reached 175,000 users in three months. The company has raised more than $1 million USD ($1.4 million CAD) in pre-seed funding from Founders Inc, a16z speedrun, and undisclosed angels. This total includes $225,000 USD in SAFEs from November and $820,000 USD from May. COO Sajeel Purewal told BetaKit the company's long-term vision is to evolve into a hybrid of Amazon and Lovable, eventually sourcing components directly or orchestrating the manufacturing of finished products.
