The Y Combinator alum's latest funding round highlights a market preference for profitable, level-funded insurance models over traditional disruption.

Angle Health announced Friday that it has raised a $200 million Series C funding round and a $400 million tender offer, valuing the company at $2.7 billion, according to TechCrunch. Vitruvian Partners led the round, with participation from Y Combinator, Town Hall Ventures, PruVen Capital, Portage Ventures, and Blumberg Capital.

Founded in 2019 and a winter 2020 YC alum, Angle Health utilizes an AI-powered platform to help more than 5,000 small businesses manage "level funded health plans." As TechCrunch reports, these plans serve as a middle ground between fully insured plans—where carriers assume all risk—and self-funded plans—where the company covers expenses. Level-funded plans allow businesses to make predictable payments while remaining insured against unexpected costs, offering the potential to recover a share of the surplus if expenses remain low.

The company integrates its platform with HR and payroll systems to make health insurance more affordable for small businesses. In a departure from the growth-at-all-costs strategies often seen in early-stage insurtech, Angle Health stated it is currently profitable. The tender offer included in the financing allows employees to liquidate a portion of their shares. The company expects the round to close by the end of September.
