The tech giant is pushing Alexa Plus to all Fire TV users automatically, but the lack of an opt-in process raises red flags.

OPINION: In the world of Big Tech, 'free' is rarely actually free. When a company like Amazon decides to automatically upgrade your hardware with a more conversational, invasive AI, you have to ask what the real currency is. If you aren't paying with a monthly subscription, you're paying with your data and your privacy.

Amazon is currently dangling a carrot to Fire TV owners in the U.S. by making Alexa Plus free for everyone, regardless of whether they hold an Amazon Prime membership. According to reporting from The Verge, this upgrade applies to a wide swath of hardware, including the Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party sets from Hisense and Panasonic that have the service built in.

On the surface, the features sound like a dream for the lazy viewer. The Verge reports that Alexa Plus allows users to jump to specific scenes, get movie recommendations based on their mood, and ask questions about content currently on the screen. TechCrunch adds that the AI allows for more nuanced searches—such as asking for a "top-rated thriller" or a "historical drama with a strong female lead"—rather than searching by a specific title.

But here is where the Trojan horse comes in: the delivery method. TechCrunch reports that Amazon is upgrading users automatically, meaning customers don't need to sign up or download an app. It is AI coming to your living room whether you want it or not. This mirrors a broader industry trend where companies like Google and Roku have similarly pushed AI upgrades to their TV platforms to replace simple search functions with conversational modes.

Amazon is already bragging about the results of this deeper integration. TechCrunch notes that Amazon claims Alexa Plus users are having nearly twice as many conversations on their Fire TVs compared to the original Alexa. To Amazon, this is a metric of success; to a consumer advocate, it's a metric of how much more time we are spending feeding an AI engine with our voice and behavioral data.

Beyond the screen, Alexa Plus is designed to lock you further into the Amazon ecosystem by managing your smart home. The Verge reports that the assistant can control door locks and lighting, while TechCrunch specifically mentions the ability to pull up Ring camera feeds directly on the television.

By removing the $19.99 monthly fee previously charged to non-Prime members (as reported by TechCrunch), Amazon isn't being generous—they are removing the friction. They want every single Fire TV owner interacting with their AI, providing a constant stream of data that fuels their ecosystem. When the upgrade is automatic and the price is zero, the product is you.
