The company is subsidizing plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work in three U.S. cities to gather real-world training data for robotics.
AI data and training company HUMXN has announced a new initiative that pays for qualifying home-service appointments in exchange for using the work as training data for artificial intelligence and robotics, according to Hacker News.
Under the program, HUMXN is subsidizing select appointments for carpet cleaning, air-duct cleaning, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing services. The initiative is currently active in Miami, Chicago, and Minneapolis. HUMXN founder Thomas Unise stated that the program aims to capture how skilled professionals interact with the physical world, as robots require more than just internet-based text and images to learn.
Participating technicians perform their standard service calls while wearing capture technology that documents the work from their perspective. HUMXN then converts these demonstrations into structured datasets. This process allows the company to collect authentic examples of tool use, decision-making, and problem-solving across various environments and equipment types—data that is difficult to replicate in a laboratory setting.
HUMXN describes a three-sided economic model: homeowners receive qualifying services at no cost, home-service companies are paid for their labor, and AI and robotics organizations gain access to specialized real-world training data. Unise noted that while millions of skilled workers perform complex tasks daily, very little of that expertise is available in a format AI systems can utilize.
The company plans to expand into more cities and service categories as the demand for physical-world training data increases. HUMXN expects this need to grow across multiple industries, including automotive repair, logistics, manufacturing, and construction.
